Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation Program for Your Heart in McAllen
The Pritikin Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation (ICR) Program at South Texas Health System Heart helps people with severe heart disease — or those who have recently had a heart-related procedure — improve their health through exercise and education. Our program uses a holistic approach to recovery, including exercise under supervision, nutrition counseling, stress management and emotional support.

Exercise
We will develop a personalized exercise program designed to improve the efficiency and stamina of the heart and lungs as well as overall physical health. These exercise classes will be closely monitored by staff and will be held Monday-Friday at various times.
Nutrition Counseling
We will guide patients on how to maintain a diet to support good heart health. Modifying eating habits and behavior can help reduce risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Stress Management
Cardiac rehabilitation that is enhanced by stress management can result in significant reductions in stress and greater improvements in medical outcomes compared to standard cardiac rehabilitation.
Emotional Support
Our Cardiac Rehabilitation specialists will play a major role in helping patients reduce anxiety about where they are in their recovery, and will help them gain or renew self-confidence in their abilities.
American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Certification
The South Texas Health System Heart Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation (ICR) program has been certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
Indications for Referral
People who have undergone the following procedures or who have the following conditions can be referred to our program by their physician: heart attack (within the last 12 months), coronary artery bypass, heart valve repair/replacement, angioplasty or stent placement, heart or heart-lung transplant, heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, or current/stable chest pain (angina).
How to Enroll
The STHS Heart Pritikin ICR Program will be available to patients with one or more of the qualifying conditions listed above. A physician referral will be required, and the referring physician will be provided with progress reports on a regular basis. The Pritikin ICR Program is Medicare-approved and covered by many commercial insurance plans, either partially or in its entirety. Coverage may vary with individual policies and should be confirmed prior to entering the program. Members of the cardiac rehab staff can provide assistance with confirming insurance coverage if needed. Your insurance may also cover the ongoing rehabilitation program that is available to those who graduate from cardiac rehab.
