South Texas Health System Heart features a full service Emergency Department and a Heart Emergency Center. Our hospital is one of the first free-standing cardiology and cardiovascular hospitals in the United States. In addition, our ER is fully equipped to treat all emergency conditions including heart attack, trauma, infections, problems associated with diabetes and early intervention for strokes. We are designated as a Level IV Designated Trauma Services by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

What to Expect When Arriving for Care

Sudden illness or injury can occur without warning, and while no one typically plans a trip to the ER, everyone should know what to expect after they arrive.

Heart Attack Care

The South Texas Health System Heart accredited Chest Pain Center offers rapid, around-the-clock, evidence-based treatment of heart attack and suspected heart attack. The center is accredited by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC ), an institute of the American College of Cardiology. To receive accreditation, a center must show that it combines evidence-based science, quality initiatives, clinical guidelines, and best practices to produce an effective care model for heart attack and suspected heart attack.

Enhanced Accreditation for PCI

In addition to the standard accreditation, South Texas Health System Heart has received an enhanced accreditation from SCPC, making it a "Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI." Hospitals awarded this designation have primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. PCI is commonly known as angioplasty, a procedure used to treat the narrowed coronary arteries found in heart disease. To receive the enhanced accreditation, a hospital must have a call team of cardiac catheterization laboratory staff and an interventional cardiologist who arrive at the cardiac catheterization lab within a short, pre-determined window of time, day or night. Accredited facilities also must have documented processes designed to maximize treatment time and improve outcomes. Door to Balloon (D2B) time is the time it takes to get a cardiac patient from the hospital entrance to artery-clearing angioplasty. At South Texas Health System Heart, we consistently strive for and achieve D2B times below the national standard. Our speed in treating heart attack patients saves lives.
